Black Lab saves his duck friends from the alligator

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG / Gray Media) – Man’s best friend was trying to save his best friends.

Beauty the black Lab is a longtime friend with the Ducks, Cress, Downey and Dot.

“She’s just super nice to them, it’s not like you might think with a duck and a dog,” said owner Misti Roberts.

Earlier this week Beauty risked her life to save her feathered friends from an alligator, according to WJHG-TV. Roberts said Beauty traveled to Lake Powell on the west side of Panama City Beach where the ducks were located because she follows them everywhere.

While they were there, an alligator got too close and Beauty tried to scare it. It was then that she was attacked.

Neighbors said the attacking alligator was around eight to ten feet tall.

“I saw an alligator right on the edge of the sand, not on the sand but right on the edge,” said Roberts.

When Roberts called Beauty, she knew something had happened.

“And then I realized she couldn’t go up the stairs, so I ran and then obviously there was blood all over the place and I realized she had been injured,” said Roberts.

The family immediately rushed Beauty to vet Dr Gerrie Barr.

“When we first brought Beauty here she was unstable and in shock, she had multiple soft tissue injuries and an obvious leg problem,” said Dr Barr.

Barr said that while alligator attacks aren’t common, they can happen.

“We need to be aware that the waterfront around freshwater surfaces can sometimes be very threatening if you have a hungry alligator like this. Nobody did anything wrong, it’s just something we need to be aware of. It doesn’t happen every day, but when it does, it’s pretty ugly, ”he said.

Barr said on Saturday Beauty would be undergoing surgery for a fractured femur.

He expects her to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks. And if things go as planned, she’ll be reunited with her duck buddies next week.

“They are his friends, there is no doubt about it. Give it credit for saving their lives, ”Barr said.
