Booz Allen opens 5G R&D lab in Maryland


Booz Allen Hamilton has revealed a major expansion of its 5G research capabilities with the launch of a new development lab in Annapolis Junction, Maryland.

The facility will be responsible for continuing Booz’s exploration of the integration and deployment of 5G for public and private customers. On-premises capabilities include a 5G standalone (SA) carrier-level network, SA mobile core, and radio access network (RAN) hardware, as well as support for multiband edge computing testing.

Booz Allen plans to combine the lab’s assets with its existing cloud, network and security offerings to provide a “test bed for cyber resilience, artificial intelligence modeling and machine learning (AI / ML) and the Integrated Internet of Things (IoT), development of immersive and emerging applications. “

The strategy for the Maryland facility is to help customers plan for 5G technical readiness, focusing on creating specific use cases for real-world implementation while considering technology readiness and by developing network policies.

The lab hopes to use these developments in the design and construction of secure 5G network architectures. Booz Allen believes its assets will support the development of RF and spectrum engineering as well as the full development of 5G ecosystem technologies.

Safety will be built into all developments from the start, Booz promised. Threat-based risk identification and management, consistent 5G vulnerability assessments, and network hardening measures should all be intrinsic to the facility’s research priorities. In the long term, Booz also plans to expand security research to new vulnerabilities in the 5G system, new countermeasures, and tailor-made intelligence analysis.

The company noted that the lab’s founding was made possible, in part, by its participation in the 5-year “DOD 5G to Next G” Congressional directive of $ 1.7 billion. The federal campaign is an effort to fund progress in 5G technological maturation of the private sector. The company expects the lab’s assets to help it meet the contract’s goal of enabling a large-scale 5G military deployment. Ongoing Booz projects funded under the same DOD purchasing facility include the development of a AI Spectrum detection application for Air Force radar systems and a 5G compatible AR and VR military training range, among others.

The announcement also comes shortly after Booz Allen joined Qualcomm’s Smart Cities Accelerator program, an effort to deploy 5G technologies in support of public sector entities. Since joining, he has served as a system integrator for other members of the program, creating unique 5G use cases for specific needs, noted Booz Allen.
