Moral Putrefaction are the first band from Tamil Nadu to reach Germany’s Wacken Open Air, one of the biggest metal and hard rock festivals in the world.

You would expect a death metal band to talk about religion, existentialism and beat down “the system”, so Bengal Famine is a surprising choice of subject. Yet Chennai-based Moral Putrefaction has tackled it and continues to weave its way through whatever past tragedies or current issues it deems relevant, highlighting the decadence – or putrefaction – of human morality. in the process.

The band have their first full album slated for release soon, but for now they have another reason to celebrate. He recently fought metal bands from all over India as well as Nepal and Bangladesh, and will now represent the Indian subcontinent at one of the biggest death metal and hard rock events in the world. The Wacken Open Air, in the village of Wacken, Germany, sees groups from all over the world compete in front of 75,000 spectators each year.

Wacken has witnessed Indian talent since 2011, but never before has it hosted a group from Tamil Nadu. This year at Rock N’ Roll Originals Presents – Metal Massacre, guitarist-vocalist Shiva Moorthy, bassist Sidharth, guitarist Beeto Jerrin and drummer Hemanth Vinod will break that spell.

“If you had told 18-year-old Shiva that he would be performing — not just assisting, but actually on stage — at Walken, he wouldn’t have believed you,” Shiva says. “It’s sad that our bassist Nithin Peter, who helped us win, can’t make it to Germany, but the band’s original bassist Sidharth is happy to step in.”

For this coveted chance, the group had to compete against eight other groups earlier this month, each of which was selected from regional rounds in different parts of the country. “We qualified two years ago,” says Shiva, adding, “But Wacken Open Air didn’t happen in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. So we had to wait, and this time we got had another chance.

The final round in 2022, held at Bengaluru Fandom, not only gave the Chennai group a chance to showcase their prowess in front of some of the country’s best, but also showcased talents they had heard a lot about, “I’ve been watching [Darjeeling-based] band Obliterating Vortex live for a while now. It was in these battles that I finally got my chance,” says Shiva.

Battle at Wacken will be a whole different ball game, but Moral Putrefaction is no stranger to international death metal. In 2017, the band supported Australian technical death metal band Psycroptic in Chennai. In 2018, at Bengaluru’s impressive Trendslaughter Fest, the members shared the stage with Draconis Infernum from Singapore and Cult of Fire from the Czech Republic. In 2020, Moral Putrefaction opened for American death metal legends Immolation at the Bangalore Open Air Metal Nights. The achievement of the group in 2022 is therefore not that far away.

For a team of metalheads gearing up to take on Germany’s best, the band has a fairly straightforward origin story, which takes place rather by chance in one of the city’s favorite little musical havens, Shruthi Musicals. It was there that Shiva first met the co-founder of Moral Putrefaction, who has since left but remains a good friend. “I was tinkering with one of the instruments in the shop and started to sing a little. This absolute stranger across the room understood what I was trying to do and started adding to my song. We have been friends ever since. Later, when we met Hemant, Sidharth and Beeto,” recalls Shiva, adding that “it was always so simple, every time.”

The band will perform at Wacken Metal Battle on August 3, 2022.
