“We are the last monsters in Havana!” Topic has unveiled a trailer for an acclaimed indie documentary called Los Ãltimos Frikis, which originally screened at DOC NYC Film Festival 2019. It is finally making its VOD and Topic debut this fall. Filmed over 10 years, Los Ultimos Frikis traces the tumultuous journey of the Cuban heavy metal band Zeus, which went from being persecuted to sanctioned by the government. On their first nationwide tour, the band faces the fate of heavy metal amid changing times. The group was originally formed during the Castro era. In the face of repression, Zeus rose to infamy as a counter-cultural phenomenon but paid the price. Zeus lead singer Dionisio “Diony” Arce spent six years in prison at the peak of his career. Today, the group is part of the system as an official group within the Cuban Rock Agency of the Ministry of Culture. This film tells their story from their origins to their revival today as Cuba goes through major political and social change. With a score by Slayer’s Dave lombardo. Sounds like a fascinating doc rock.
Here is the official US trailer (+ poster) of Nicholas Brennan’s doc Los Ãltimos Frikis, from YouTube:
Shot in Cuba for ten years, Los Ãltimos Frikis tells the story of iconic Cuban heavy metal band Zeus and their three-decade struggle to be heard. When Zeus was formed in the 1980s, rock music was illegal, and rockers were derisively referred to as los frikis – monsters. The communist government of Fidel Castro viewed rock and roll as a deadly threat sent by a capitalist enemy. As Cuba’s political and social climate undergoes a historic change, the group undertakes a nationwide tour across the island to defend its cultural impact and livelihoods, to prove that frikis still have a voice in Cuba. Los Ãltimos Frikis is directed by the filmmaker Nicolas brennan, making his feature film directorial debut after a few other shorts previously. Produced by John Logan Pierson. This one originally premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival 2019. The subject will debut Los Ãltimos Frikis in VOD on September 2, then on Streaming subject September 16.
