Dolmayan’s new Radiohead cover starring Tom Morello + Mr. Shadows

Although System of a Down is currently on recording hiatus, drummer John Dolmayan has taken care of his These Gray Men project. Calling on a few musician friends, the drummer reinvented well-known songs in covers that bear his unique imprint.

The eponymous album These Gray Men finds Dolmayan working with Serj Tankian, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Mr. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Sirusho and many more. Over the past weekend, the drummer posted footage from a video shoot he was doing with Mr. Shadows which can be seen below.

The eight-song album began with Dolmayan sparking ideas about his trips between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. From 2014 he started to come up with ideas and dabble. The drummer says that the idea for the group came “from the need to artistically give, to create and to reinvent”.

The first song from the collection to surface is a rendition of Radiohead’s “Street Spirit”, as seen in the video below. Dolmayan said Rolling stone, “This song in particular is a really touching and moving song. I like the gloom, in your room and it’s raining outside, it’s cold and your girlfriend dumped you thinking that this song always gave me … But when I listened to it, I said to myself: “J ‘would like the drums to come sooner’ or, ‘How [John] Bonham approach this song if it was a [Led] Zeppelin song? ‘ Because I’m such a fan of the song, I wanted to make a tribute version of it.

The track is reinforced by the guitar solo of Tom Morello and the voice of Mr. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold. “I gave him a feel for the vibe I wanted and said, ‘Be yourself and play the whole song. “The point isn’t to agonize over something, it’s just to be spontaneous and create something cool,” said Morello’s guest killer drummer.

Shadows adds about his participation: “When John told me he wanted to reinvent some of his favorite songs for an album, I was very intrigued. I have always respected Radiohead but did not know their complete catalog. When John sent ‘Street Spirit’ I was immediately blown away by the sounds. Since then, I’ve been on a huge Radiohead kick. The addition of Tom Morello to our version was the icing on the cake. I think this recording stays true to the original while adding John’s overall vision.

Besides Radiohead, other bands covered on the album are AFI, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Eminem, Del Shannon, Two Door Cinema Club and a mashed track featuring a song by Madonna with a nod to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
