The Hampton University Marching Force performed in Macy’s 2021 Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday. The group was supposed to perform last year, but postponed its appearance to improve safety protocols suggested by CDC safety regulations and of New York City.
During their televised performance, the group performed a rendition of the Kool & the Gang hit “Celebration”.
The band received a donation of $ 100,000 from Pepsi Stronger Together, a series of local initiatives providing tailored programming support to communities across the country. The donation provided workout uniforms for the group and transportation via the Pepsi Stronger Together bus, which arrived in New York City on Monday where the group members met with Big Apple greeted by DJ Envy of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club. , who is an alumnus of Hampton University.
“The goal of our group is to help students improve their situation in life through skills they learn beyond music,” said Dr. Thomas L. Jones, Jr., director of groups from Hampton University. “Through Pepsi Stronger Together, we can provide these students with a unique and incredible experience on a huge national stage. “
Each year, the Macy’s Parade Band Committee seeks bands that have the stage presence and the musical and marching abilities to captivate over 3.5 million live viewers and over 50 million viewers. Hampton was selected from over 100 applicants as one of nine groups selected to parade in the annual Holiday Show.
Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2021 has been tweaked to safely bring the event to over 50 million viewers nationwide on Thanksgiving Day, while retaining all of the cherished holiday traditions.
