David Demeter, owner and operator of Drum Lab in Laguna Hills, CA (DLLH), is excited to announce a few upcoming Master Classes that drummers everywhere will want to experience.
DLLH opened in 2002 and has been a fixture in the drum and music education community ever since. DLLH survived the wrath of the COVID-19 pandemic and is now returning to its pre-pandemic form of consistent excellence. In fact, with these newly announced Master Classes, DLLH seems to be strengthening like a hurricane.
On June 22, DLLH hosted its first of 3 Master Classes featuring Gary Ferguson whose resume includes a decade teaching at the prolific Los Angeles College Of Music which was founded, in part, by drumming icons such as the late Joe Porcaro and Ralph Humphrey. Ferguson, well known to many players, has played with Gary Moore, Steve Lukather, Larry Carlton, The New Radicals and Eddie Money. Ferguson’s session focused on snare and drum techniques and also included an extensive question and answer period with the audience.
The second upcoming Master Class will feature fan favorite John Ferraro and will take place July 13 at DLLH (7:00-9:00 p.m. – tickets are $70.00). Ferraro, a seasoned and versatile veteran who can play a wide range of styles, has played with the legendary Burt Bacharach, Eddie Van Halen, Boz Scaggs, Linda Ronstadt, Dick Van Dyke, Steve Morse and Rod Stewart in addition to many others . John Ferraro’s course will focus on recording techniques and related issues and will also address such important – and often asked – questions as what should and shouldn’t be played on a particular recording? Likewise, Ferraro will give much-researched advice on what artists and producers look for in a drum track. Session players and anyone performing or involved in recording won’t want to miss this course.
The third and final Master Class on July 23 is none other than marquee player and master artist himself, Gregg Bissonette. Bissonette is no stranger to readers of Beato’s Blog and he is well known for his long stint in Ringo Starr All Starr Bands, as well as playing and/or recording with artists like David Lee Roth, Joe Satriani, Robin Zander, Gary Hoey, Enrique Iglesias, Andy Summers, Santana, Duran Duran and many more. (The Bissonette class will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and tickets are $100.00). Bissonette will discuss and explore various musical concepts, including techniques and thoughts on how to stay creative and continually evolve your playing and performance as a drummer.
Demeter itself has a long history and affinity for drum clinics such as those run by the DLLH. said Demeter,
“Growing up in Westwood, California, I took masterclasses and clinics at UCLA, some music stores, Northridge University, Musicians local 47, Pro Drum and School of Dick Grove Music. In Dick Grove there was a summer with Louie Bellson, John Geurin, Paul Humphrey, Alan Dawson and Jeff Porcaro. I saw a young Chad Wackerman on a huge set of blonde Slingerlands when he was 16 and he was playing like Billy Cobham. What I mean is that I fell in love with the format and started doing small masterclasses with John Ferarro and Walfredo Reyes Jr., then Gregg Bissonette, Ray Luzier and many others. Drum Lab students and the drumming community love it too and so, I’m thrilled to offer these three masterclasses to our students and anyone else who wants to attend. Everyone is welcome.”
We certainly applaud David Demeter for his hard work and urge any drummer of any age or gender to attend the next two Master Classes at DLLH. Again, John Ferraro will present on July 13 and Gregg Bissonette will present on July 23. These classes are about giving drummers of all genres an intimate and personal look at the techniques and thoughts of these masters of their drumming art.
