moe. Hosts Mike Gordon for Allman Brothers Coverage at Red Rocks [Photos/Videos/Full Audio]

Saturday, the New York rockers moe. delivered an explosive straight-set performance to CO’s beloved Morrison Amphitheater of the Red Rocks. White jeans took care of the opening slot of the evening, followed by music by Mike Gordon.

Moé. opened their first set with an exploratory rendition of ‘Timmy Tucker’, highlighted by Chuck garvey and Al schnier exchange a series of steamy guitar solos. With Jim loughlin maintaining a funky groove on the xylophone, the quartet smoothly connects to “Tubing The River Styx”. Vinnie Amico and Rob derhak locked in a tight rhythmic pocket before Garvey takes the lead and sets sail on happy improvisational territory. After “Tubing The River Styx”, moe. moved on with “Dangerous Game” and “Jazz Cigarette,” a pair of new tracks that the band debuted in Portland, ME’s State Theater in February.

Loughlin continued to wow the crowd with his xylophone before the group entered the “Water” led by Derhak. To close their impressive first set, moe. invited Gordon to add a second bass on a cover of the Allman Brothers Band‘s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”. Amico and Loughlin set the tone for their kits before Garvey and Schnier locked themselves into the main guitar theme of “Liz Reed”. Picking up the pace, Gordon and Derhak gave Red Rocks a badass bass duel, as the rowdy crowd erupted in applause. Moé. did he do ABB justice in a venue where the beloved band has performed on multiple occasions during their illustrious career.

After a brief pause, moe. returned to open their second set with “The Road”. The group displayed some impressive vocal harmonies before Schnier had the chance to take on a gritty guitar solo backed up by the punchy rhythms of Amico. “The Road” landed in “New Hope For The New Year,” with Garvey taking the lead vocal. After a series of cutting edge guitar solos, Schnier switched to his keyboard layout and the band tapped into “Bullet,” with the attentive crowd singing along with the band. Loughlin was on fire all night, hopping between his percussion kit and his xylophone. The improvised ensemble continued with “Crushing”, which succeeded fan favorite “George”. The band patiently worked on “George” before closing their main frame with a massive rendition of “Rebubula”. Although it was cut due to a new strict curfew policy, moe. offered a blanket of Vapors‘Become Japanese’ in the callback slot.
