OPPO India makes the first VoNR call from its 5G lab in India



OPPO India today successfully took another 5G milestone by making the first VoNR call from its 5G lab in Hyderabad.

5G VoNR (Voice / Video on New Radio) calls were made using the latest Reno6 series smartphone and an end-to-end 5G Autonomous (SA) network powered by Keysight test solutions in the lab Hyderabad 5G Innovation from OPPO. The success of this initiative demonstrates a step forward in the deployment of 5G in India, demonstrating 5G VoNR on any frequency band defined by 3GPP.

The 5G VoNR realization was completed by emulating the 5G core network, 5G RAN and an IMS server using the Keysight E7515B UXM 5G wireless test platform, a highly integrated signaling test platform taking support the latest 3GPP version 15 and above features, enabling 5G calling with Reno6 devices in different 5G New Radio (NR) deployment modes; non-autonomous (NSA), autonomous (SA) and frequency bands in the Sub6 and millimeter wave frequencies. In the test process, the 2 UXM5G devices emulate the 5G network and connect 2 devices to VoNR via the IMS utility.

VoNR, or “Voice over 5G New Radio” is a basic calling service that makes full use of the SA architecture of the 5G network. Compared to previous calling services, VoNR offers significantly lower latency, dramatically improved sound quality and picture quality resulting in a high overall experience for users.

The SA architecture is one of the main architectures of future 5G networks. Operators around the world are actively laying the foundation for 5G SA networks. OPPO India has also worked on the deployment of solutions under the SA network. While most 5G testing in India involved non-standalone models, OPPO developed the solutions on stand-alone platforms, which involved testing devices with an authentic 5G setup. As one of the first mobile phone brands in India to support VoNR calling under SA architecture, OPPO aims to ensure that once released, every user can have a full 5G device experience.

OPPO is working closely with supply chain partners to advance 5G technology and improve user experience while partnering with major carriers and retailers to connect with more people. OPPO has also focused heavily on the development of 5G in India and was the first smartphone brand to conduct a 5G WhatsApp video call in its R&D center and another call with Guy Forget at Roland Garros. Recently, the Reno 6 series supporting over 11 bands also showed positive results in a 5G standalone network trial with Jio.
