Tower of Power group Stanley Clarke lined up for the 20th anniversary of Tbilisi Jazz Fest

Renowned US band Tower of Power and Grammy-winning bassist Stanley Clarke are among a list of famous jazz names and emerging talent set to celebrate an anniversary edition of the Tbilisi Jazz Festival.

Opening in two weeks, the celebration will welcome music lovers for three dates at the Tbilisi Event Hall.

The launch event will involve longtime American jazz and RnB group Tower of Power, which premiered in California in 1968.

Their appearance in Tbilisi will come as part of the group’s European tour and ahead of their 50th anniversary next year.

The Joe Lovano Classic Quartet, led by the American saxophonist and composer, will take over the celebrations on November 4, before the closing performance involving local and guest talent.

It will see double bass player Eddie Gomez, who has worked with the famous Bill Evans Trio as well as famous artists such as Miles Davies, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.

The stage will also host Grammy Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke, whose group includes Georgian pianist Beka Gochiashvili.

The Papuna Sharikadze Trio, led by the young Georgian jazz prodigy studying at Berklee University, will complete the list of the show which draws the curtains of the festival.

Established during Soviet times in 1978, the festival was started by jazz groups from the Union republics.

Social and political changes in the USSR in the 1980s saw the festival go international for its 1989 edition.

The legacy of the event has continued within independent Georgia since 2000, with legendary artists including Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette and Herbie Hancock.
